Abstract
Maintenance assessment is critical to production systems and influences equipment performance, operations and productivity. Maintenance Productivity Index (MPI) models overall equipment effectiveness and performance, but remains underutilised in many Nigerian bottling operations, hindering assessment of maintenance effectiveness and its impact on production. The study analysed the maintenance efficiency of a water bottling company. An Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) model was developed to evaluate key production machines comprising the blowing, Monoblock, water filling, and streamline packaging machines connected in series based on availability, performance, and quality rates. Daily production data were collected from the production and technical departments of the water bottling company for twelve months, through observation, data sheets, and document reviews. A combined OEE for all machines was derived to evaluate the overall system’s performance. The results reveal that the monthly quality factor was higher or slightly below the world target (between 89.60% and 99.70%); machine availability was below the world target except in December, while performance was lowest and varied significantly between 18% and 78% and was below the world target. MPI, derived by combining the machine factors in series for all months, ranges from 0.15% to 7.32%, far below the adjusted global benchmark of 52%, implying poor maintenance performance and production losses. Optimising maintenance strategies and resources by analysing the production line's Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is crucial for maintenance and operational performance, ensuring that every maintenance resource spent significantly improves production. The company should adopt proactive maintenance to reduce machine downtime and improve efficiency.
