Load Frequency Control of Two-Area Interconnected Network using Multi-Stage Controller

Abstract
The task of the load frequency control (LFC) in an interconnected power system is to maintain the frequency of each area within limits and to keep tie-line power flow within some pre-specified limit. This research work presents the implementation of optimal LFC of a two-area interconnected network integrated with renewable energy sources. The control area 1 consists of thermal power plant unit and 85MW wind farm while control-area 2 consists of thermal power plant unit and a 50MW PV system. The novelty of this work is the use of Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA) with multistage Proportional Derivative filter type with 0.85 plus Proportional Integral PDF+(0.85+PI) controller for better dynamic responses. The gains of the controller were obtained using Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA) by minimizing the Integral time absolute error (ITAE) in the performance assessment. The effectiveness of GOA-PDF+(0.85+PI) controller was compared with other optimization methods like SSA-PID and GA-PID under different operating conditions. The results obtained shows that the proposed controller outperformed other compared control techniques in terms of undershoot, overshoot and settling time.
