EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION USING DESIGN EXPERT SOFTWARE FOR LIGHT WEIGHT CONCRETE PRODUCTION WITH SAWDUST AS PARTIAL REPLACEMENT FOR FINE AGGREGATE

Abstract
This experimental study considered the use of sawdust as a partial replacement for sand as fine aggregate in the production of lightweight concrete. The sawdust specimen was pre-treated before use by boiling and air drying. Design Expert software was used for the Design of Experiment (DOE) which gave rise to 13 mix proportions of sand and sawdust. These mixtures were used to produce 104 concrete cubes of 150mm x 150mm x 150mm for testing in the laboratory. Two sets of samples were made by both batching by volume and weight. Slump test was carried out on fresh concrete while compressive strength, water absorption and comparative weight loss were tested at 7 and 28 days of curing. Results showed that increased sawdust proportions resulted in decreased workability and compressive strength, but resulted in increased water absorption and weight loss. These results were analyzed to give final model equations. Optimized solutions for design mixes were obtained for both weight and volume batching giving; 8.49% replacement with 1.97% weight loss for volume batching and 2.38% replacement with 3.49% weight loss for weight batching as optimum proportions of sawdust.
