Evaluating the Potential of Okra Crude Extract as Alternative Disinfectant in Water Treatment

N. J. Alfred.

Abstract
To provide drinking water to more than 663 million people who lack access to clean water supply in developing countries, this
study was aimed at evaluating the water treatment potential of okra seed on some microorganisms in raw water. The
performance of the extract was conducted using a jar test apparatus and Colilert 18 Qunti-Tray method for coliform
assessment. The results show the inactivation of faecal coliform with okra crude extract (OCE) was higher at higher dosage;
achieving 67% with 200 mg/l dose compared with 53% achieved using 50 mg/l. However, E-coli bacteria were found to be
more sensitive to the antimicrobial compounds in the extract at lower dosage. At 50 mg/l, the inactivation efficiency of OCE
was 66% but deteriorated at 100 mg/l to 57%. Overall, the log removal value (LRV) was <1- Log (90%) in all the cases.
Furthermore, the inactivation ability of OCE against these bacteria is partial but its application in water treatment could
lower microbial population in raw water for local communities where access to water is a big challenge. Therefore, the use of
OCE as disinfectant could help to reduce the cost of synthetic disinfectants in developing countries.

Key words: Okra, crude extract, water treatment, inactivation, bacteria
