Evaluation of the Compressive Strength of locally available fine aggregates around Usen locality

Abstract
A proactive strategy to reduce the use of poor aggregates in concrete applications and to stop the problem of buildings collapsing due to the poor quality of concrete used in construction, particularly in Nigeria, can be the provision of vital information to professionals and stakeholders in the local concrete industry on the quality of locally available fine aggregates usage. Research has established the fact that the characteristics of freshly mixed and hardened concrete are significantly influenced by the physical and chemical characteristics of fine aggregates. The objective of this study is to examine and assess the compressive strength of concrete made from fine aggregates that are readily accessible in Usen town, Edo State. The findings indicate that the compressive strength values attained after the twenty-eight-day duration exhibit a range of 21 to 34 MPa for the various fine aggregate used. The mean compressive strength of River sand is 34 MPa. The erosion sand was found to be 28 MPa, whereas the average compressive strength of the laterite sand was recorded as 21 MPa. The aforementioned analysis suggests that a viable alternative to the costly River sand in construction projects can be achieved by effectively using erosion or laterite sand as fine aggregate. This substitution has the potential to substantially lower construction expenses.
